Class 3:  Slot It Group C

This is a class for more skilled drivers who want to have some freedom to “tune” their cars for better performance.  The cars are models of the Group C/GTP cars from the 1980s, including the Porsche 956 and 962, Sauber-Mercedes, Audi R8C, Jaguar XJR9, Lancia LC2, and Nissan R390.  These cars retail for $50 – 55 and the allowable modifications cost about another $15 – 20.

These modifications (and only these) should be allowed:

·        Gear ratio may be changed

·        Rear tires may be replaced with Slot It 19x10mm silicones

·        The Slot it SICN04 racing magnet may be used.

·        Self-stick lead weight may be added

·        Body mounting and motor mount screws may be loosened for better handling.

Of course, you won’t want to race just these three classes forever.  There are many other cars you could race and a whole world of performance modifications available for them.  You’ll get to those in due time, but for now you are looking for a good place to start.  These three classes will do the trick and give your fledgling race program a good, solid foundation.

It’s an excellent idea to show everyone how to do all the things that can legally be done to their cars so everyone will be able, with a little experience, to field a competitive car.  This ensures that as much as possible the races will be decided by driving skill and practice rather than by widely differing levels of technical knowledge.  .

You will soon figure out, if you haven’t already, that cars are not the only element of slot racing technology that needs to be kept in check to hold down costs and equalize the competition.  You need to limit track design, controllers, and power supplies, also.
