The
slot car hobby recreates in miniature the whole world of
motorsports, from the Monaco Gran Prix to the Daytona 500 to the
24 Hours of LeMans and on down the line to every local road
circuit, drag strip, and oval track, reflecting the life-size
racing interests of slot car builders across the world.
Gordon Piszar’s model of a dirt modified, built on a styrene
chassis, represents a corner of the slot car world bypassed by
the slot car manufacturers. Gordon, from Ballwin, Mo.,
exercised a lot of creativity in building it. It's a
non-magnet car, powered by a
Falcon motor and kept settled down by a nice chunk of
lead. The body is from a Dollar Store “Low Rodz” toy car.
This was Gordon’s first attempt at building a styrene chassis.
He obtained an assortment of Plastruct styrene building
materials from his local hobby shop and waded into the project
without a clear plan. Gordon says, “I knew what body I was going
to use and built the chassis to fit it.”
