Quick and Easy Mustang

A slot car repaint doesn’t have to be complicated to look good on the track.  Often a single overall color with decals well chosen to complement it is all you need.  Take this Scalextric Mustang, for instance.

This car started out as a Scalextric C2450 all-white TransAm Mustang All-white cars, now available from both Scalextric and Slot It, are the ideal starting point for custom paint jobs, as you don’t have an original finish to sand off before you begin your repaint.  All the builder needed to do on this car was to detach the body from the chassis by removing a few screws, remove the interior tub, windows, and a few detail parts (bumpers, taillights, and photo etched grille), wash the body in warm, soapy water, and rinse and dry thoroughly.  The body was then ready to paint.

It’s always a good idea to spray a coat of flat white or flat light gray primer on the body before applying the color coats.  On this car it was Testor Model Master #2719 white primer.  The primer gives the color coat a better surface to stick to and also ensures that the surface is of a uniform color to begin with (especially important if you’ve done any modifications to the body and have added body parts or body putty of different colors on it).  This is especially recommended with light colors.
