And this is how it looked after we made three simple changes:

See how much more aggressive it looks?

To get this look we added the front airdam from a Scalextric W8768 replacement parts pack.  It’s a stock part used on other Scalextric L88 Corvettes.  The mounting holes for it are right at the front of every L88 Corvette chassis.

Next, we painted the wheels with Testor model Master #1781 aluminum paint.  This covers up the rather wimpy-looking original chrome finish and makes the wheels look like proper racing wheels.

Then, we widened the front track to get the tires out to the very edge of the bodywork.  This required a longer axle and some axle spacers.  Because the new axle was not knurled at the ends as the original one was we used a drop of CA glue on each end to firmly secure the wheels in place.  The wheels can still be removed easily if needed.  Not only does this give the car a more muscular looking stance, it also improves handling.

If you look closely you’ll notice one other change we made, though not primarily for appearance purposes.  The original rear tires have been replaced with a pair of Indy Grips IG1009 silicones.  The Indy Grips dramatically improve traction and handling for quicker lap times.  You’ll also notice that the new airdam is cracked and the rear view mirror is missing, which means the car has seen action on the track.  After all, we couldn’t condemn a car this cool to a boring existence as a shelf queen now, could we?
